Just a Couple of Growth Pics – June 2015

When I did my 2015 update, I mentioned that I’d show the growth from the back.

I never got around to doing it.  I just kept forgetting to ask my daughter (or anyone else) to take them for me.  smh

Anyway, about a week or so ago, I was in the middle of tightening my locs and I decided to shoot a couple of pics myself.  They’re not the best, but you’ll get the idea… [Read more…] about Just a Couple of Growth Pics – June 2015

Why Locs Rock

Believe it or not, there are folks out there who wonder…

“Why in the world would anyone want locs (dreadlocks) in their hair??”

Or…

“Why did you DO that to your hair?”

Or they’ll say something slick like…

“Your hair would be so pretty if it were straight!” 😒

Admittedly, I used to BE one of those people. Yep, the Bradelocz Lady used to think locs were dirty, ugly, and just plain nasty.

In hindsight, I know it was out of pure ignorance, coupled with the heavy indoctrination of westernized beliefs when it came to hair… that straight hair was superior.

Now that my mind has been shifted…

I feel compelled to express why I love locs and why I think… KNOW they rock! 🙂

Some will feel me, some will completely get it, and others will not and that’s okay.

But hey, ya never know what kind of enlightenment this article may be for someone, so here goes…

1. Locs are one of the most natural ways to wear & appreciate our NAPtural hair

Locking is what our hair would do if there were no combs, brushes, hot tools, etc.

In fact, the kinkier the hair is, the better suited it is for locking! Some of the most BEAUTIFUL locs I’ve ever seen are the ones on hair that is super-tightly coiled.

So if you’re tired of fighting with your “naps”, beating them into subjection with heat or chemicals, or trying to detangle & comb thru them… let ’em do what they wanna naturally do!

2. Locs are a HUGE time saver

Imagine waking up and only needing a light fluff or spritz with water to “wake them up”, rather than having to plug in a curling iron or straightener.

That’s what locs can do for you… provide you with that ‘get-up-and-go hair’.

3. Locs are virtually “wash-and-go”

Unless you have to tighten them, the only thing to do is separate the the ones that try joining together, apply a little oil and you’re all set!

No blow-drying, flat-ironing, curling or the like although if you desire, you can style them.

4. Locs are virtually worry & hassle-free

Sure there’s maintenance, but if you use an interlocking method, then you’ll only have to do that once every 4-8 weeks or so.

Not only that, but you won’t find yourself running from the rain, avoiding water parks or getting splashed/dunked in the pool, and you won’t fear sweating your hair out while working out or anything else!

5. Locs are very versatile

They come in all shapes & sizes and can be styled, sculpted and molded into many beautiful styles or simply worn as-is!

Those are just a few reasons locs totally ROCK!

I’m sure there are many more reasons that weren’t mentioned here, but the aforementioned are a good starting point!

So, if you’ve been on the fence about locking your hair, hopefully this has served as inspiration and encouragement to go for it.

Bradelocz Q & A: Can Bradelocz Be Taken Down?

Today I will answer another question from one of my Bradelocz subscribers…

“Can Bradlocz be taken down and what is the average time it takes to put them in?” – Shelle

Question 1: Can Bradelocz be taken down?

I figure this question is asked because of the “permanency” of Bradelocz, or locs in general.

But the answer is, yes, they can!

In fact, most types of locs can be taken down.

I’ve taken Bradelocz down… twice! Once on my eldest daughter, and once on myself.  And while it’s most definitely a very tedious process, even more so the longer you’ve been locked; it’s not an impossible feat!

Also, depending on the length of your hair and the time you’ve had them in, you may have to cut some of the length to make it a little easier. My locs had been in almost 10 years when I decided to take them down.

Question 2: What’s the average time it takes to put Bradelocz in?

This is going to depend on a number of factors:

  • The length of your hair when starting out – the longer your hair is, the longer it may take to install the braids/plaits for Bradelocz.
  • The size you choose to put in.  The Bradelocz ebook has a sizing chart that will guide you on making 3 different sizes. The one you choose will also play a role – the smaller the loc size, the longer it may take.  The larger, the shorter amount of time it may take.
  • Your hair density (the amount of hairs per square inch of your head) as well as your head size.  Not to be funny here, but it’s true!  If the circumference of your head is on the larger side, then that may also make the installation of your Bradelocz take longer.

Bradelocz: How Long Does it Take The Braid Pattern to Go Away?

Here is another Bradelocz question from one of our customers…

“How long does it take for the braid pattern to go away and the hair look more like a loc than a braid?”

The braid pattern seems to wanna “hang in there” longer for one of three reasons:

  1. You start off with long hair that is 8 inches or longer
  2. Your hair texture is softer and curl pattern looser
  3. Both

If you start your locs with roughly 3-6 inches of hair, the braid pattern doesn’t seem to last as long.

Same if your hair is more coarse in texture and tighter in curl pattern.

My eldest daughter started locking with about 8 inches of hair AND she had a loose, wiry curl pattern. She kept that braid pattern for a LONG time.  In fact, as we were taking her locs down, you could still see her braid pattern very distinctly under the fuzziness.

On the other hand, my braid pattern was gone after about the first six months to a year or so. I started out with shorter hair that was about 4 inches at the longest, and while my texture wasn’t tightly coiled, it wasn’t as loose as hers either.

A Few Things to Consider

If you have a softer texture or hair and/or a looser curl pattern and you feel the braid look will be bothersome to you, then you may consider starting with 6 inches or less.

If you have a more coarse texture and tighter curl pattern, then you should be good either way but you might  want to start with no MORE than 8 inches of length.

But at the end of the day, I want you to think about what I market Bradelocz as…

Permanent Braids!

So if you go into starting Bradelocz with the mindset, “I’m getting permanent braids” or “I have permanent braids!“… then the whole issue of when the braid pattern goes way becomes a non-issue. 😉

Can Bradelocz Be Done With 2-Strand Twists Instead of Braids?

Here is a question someone emailed me with that I want to address:

“Will it work with double-stranded twists instead of braids? I ask because i just think my hair looks better in 2-stranded twists than in braids. Have you had anyone use your system with double-stranded twists instead of braids?”

Locs, in and of themselves, can definitely be started with two-strand twists, of course.  But no, they wouldn’t necessarily  be considered Bradelocz simply because of the fact that they’re NOT started with braids.   They’d just be locs started with twists and maintained using the Latchin’ method (IF that is what you chose to do to maintain the roots).

Bradelocz are specifically locs started with braids and maintained using the Latchin’ technique.

BUT…that is NOT to say that you can’t use the information in the eBook to care for and maintain your locs because there are some tips in terms of care and maintenance that can be used regardless of whether you start with braids or not such as:  how to eliminate (or at least minimize) unraveling when shampooing, how to tighten them, styling tips, etc.

So if the question is whether or not you can use the information presented in the Bradelocz Guide for locs started by other methods, the answer is yes but again, they won’t actually BE Bradelocz per say.   But hey…I won’t tell if you won’t! 🙂
