How Important is Meticulous Parting For Starter Locs?

One of my Bradelocz customers asked…

“How important is it that the parts are lined up evenly, brick-layered or just wildly braided?”

And there really is no right or wrong answer to that because it all boils down to personal preference.

When I started my initial set of Bradelocz, I made the sections in the front as neat as possible.

But once I got to the back, I got lazy and began to randomly grab sections of hair with no actual sectioning – I guess what was referred to as “wildly braided”.

Bradelocz Q&A: Questions About Locs Swelling, The Itchies and More

Here is another Bradelocz Q & A where I address the following questions from Isabel:

“… I’ve started them with the latching method. How long do I have to wait until I can wash them? Do locs really swell over time? What kind of products can I use to keep my hair moisturized? and last but not least..what can I do about the ITCHIES?? It’s killin me lol.”

In all honesty, all of those questions (and more) are available in my Bradelocz ebook guide, even if you’ve started your locs with the latch hook, the information would be totally applicable because that (latching) is the method I teach for maintenance.

But I will briefly answer your questions, although I highly recommend that you consider acquiring the ebook to really go into depth, as well as provide you with a solid foundation of information, what to expect, managing your locs, and more!

1. Washing

You can wash your hair as soon as you need to because latching (as well as braiding) holds up much better than had you started with comb twists

2. Swelling

Yes the locs do swell overtime. As they go through the process, they will swell and then, over time,  condense to their final size.

3. Products for Moisture

I normally do not endorse any particular (commercial) products because everyone is different and I’ve just not found that one, “magic” product that I love.

So I usually recommend mixing a bottle of water with a little bit of natural oil (olive, jojoba, etc.) and spritz the locs with that every so often.

4. Itchies

The itchies are part of the process. For many, an apple cider vinegar rinse after shampooing helps. You could even add a tablespoon, along with a few drops of tea tree oil, to the water and oil mixture I mentioned above and spritz your scalp with that in order to sooth the itchy scalp.

Hope this has been helpful and again, my ebook would be a great one-stop source of information for you to refer to as you go through this process!

Will A Latch Hook Damage Your Hair?

If you’ve ever wondered whether or not using a latch hook to tighten your locs was damaging and could pull your hair out, please allow me to dispel that myth and ease your mind! [Read more…] about Will A Latch Hook Damage Your Hair?

Bradelocz Q & A: Can Bradelocz Be Taken Down?

Today I will answer another question from one of my Bradelocz subscribers…

“Can Bradlocz be taken down and what is the average time it takes to put them in?” – Shelle

Question 1: Can Bradelocz be taken down?

I figure this question is asked because of the “permanency” of Bradelocz, or locs in general.

But the answer is, yes, they can!

In fact, most types of locs can be taken down.

I’ve taken Bradelocz down… twice! Once on my eldest daughter, and once on myself.  And while it’s most definitely a very tedious process, even more so the longer you’ve been locked; it’s not an impossible feat!

Also, depending on the length of your hair and the time you’ve had them in, you may have to cut some of the length to make it a little easier. My locs had been in almost 10 years when I decided to take them down.

Question 2: What’s the average time it takes to put Bradelocz in?

This is going to depend on a number of factors:

  • The length of your hair when starting out – the longer your hair is, the longer it may take to install the braids/plaits for Bradelocz.
  • The size you choose to put in.  The Bradelocz ebook has a sizing chart that will guide you on making 3 different sizes. The one you choose will also play a role – the smaller the loc size, the longer it may take.  The larger, the shorter amount of time it may take.
  • Your hair density (the amount of hairs per square inch of your head) as well as your head size.  Not to be funny here, but it’s true!  If the circumference of your head is on the larger side, then that may also make the installation of your Bradelocz take longer.
