Starting braidlocs isn’t hard to do at all, provided you know how to braid/plait, or know someone else who can do it for you.
I successfully started my own braidlocs (or as I like to call ’em, Bradelocz), and so have many others.
Today, I’m going to share how you can easily start your very own set of beautiful locs, starting with basic braids and be on your way to a journey of freedom with braidlocs!
But first…
Before Deciding to Get Braidlocs
Prior to starting your braidlocs, you should consider:
- Are you going to D.I.Y. (do it yourself) or have someone else either assist you or do it for you, period?
- Will braids hold up in your hair texture or the current length of your hair?
- How do you intend to care for them?
– Are you going to palmroll the roots every week or two and if so, what products are you going to use that won’t cause build up or excess lint accumulation? Or…
– Are you going to freeform where you do nothing outside of washing and separating the locs that try to join together? Or…
– Are you going to use an interlocking technique where you actually put the new growth into a “holding pattern” of sorts and if so, will you use a tool such as a latch hook or just your own fingers?
Be sure to take the aforementioned into consideration as you’re determining whether or not you truly want braidlocs. If you’ve decided, “yes”, then continue reading.
How to Install Braidlocs
Once you’ve done your due diligence and settled on starting your locs with braids, you can follow these steps to get well on your way to your new head of braidlocs!
TIP: Allot yourself a good 2-3 days (or longer, depending on how slowly you braid) to get this done.
1. Shampoo your hair
The first thing you’ll need in order to start braidlocs is to start with a clean head of hair! I don’t recommend using conditioner, but if you need it to help with detangling, you can apply a small amount or use a leave-in.
2. Decide what size you want your braidlocs to be
It’s a good idea to sort of “plan” how you want your locs to look and one way is to know, approximately, what size you want them to ultimately be. Just know that initially, your braidlocs will be pretty skinny, but don’t let that dissuade you… they will swell up over time.
TIP: There is a sizing chart inside the Bradelocz eBook Guide that will show you precisely how to properly section your hair in order to get up to four loc size variations – you just decide what size you want your locs to end up, then follow the chart to get that size!
Once you’ve determined the right size for you, then…
3. Section your hair
Start sectioning from forehead to nape and from ear-to-ear and begin making the rows and then the sections for your braidlocs. Then, begin braiding!
TIP: Start in the front and work your way back so that you get the most visible area done first, before you start getting tired. Doing so also helps if you need to pull it back for that quick store or fast food run! lol
4. Finishing up
Once your entire head of hair is completely braided up, you can mist your new braidlocs lightly with a spray bottle of water, natural oil (jojoba, grape seed, olive, etc) and your favorite essential oil(s).
Now, ex-haaaale.
Rest your arms & fingers, then take a picture and celebrate a job well-done AND the fact that you have now began your journey to a beautiful head of braidlocs!
